An Antarctica trip-cost will depend on your answers to the following questions:

  1. How long do you want to go for?

  2. Are you traveling Solo?

  3. What kind/how many activities do you wish to join in?

  4. How in advance do you book your trip?

  5. When are you traveling?

1-How Much is a trip to Antarctica: How long do you want to go for?

Most cruises departures from Ushuaia in Argentina or Punta Arenas in Chile and take about two days to reach the Antarctic Peninsula. The classic 10 or 12-day cruise to the Peninsula gives a really good feel for the special nature of the place: the icebergs, penguins, whales, seals, expedition history and solitude. This are the shorter trips and also the cheapest.

Other Antarctic itineraries include the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, as well as the Antarctic Peninsula. If you are very keen on bird and animal life, it’s worth taking one of the longer cruises to all three destinations, but these tend to take between 18 and 22 days.

If you are short of time, or can’t face crossing the Drake Passage, it is possible to fly to the South Shetland Islands and join a ship there, though this will add at least USD 2,000 / USD 3,000 to the cost of the trip.

There is another longer expeditions, The Ross Sea itinerary, takes 34 days, and reaches unique places in Antarctica, departures in Ushuaia and ends in Bluff, New Zealand. This Is one of the most expensive itinearyes due to the length and the places you will reach!

This is a Short Price Guide (prices per person) for you to have an idea of Antarctica expedition Cruises costs:  Classic Antarctica Peninsula cruise (10-11 days) USD6,000 – 12,000 Antarctic Circle cruise (12-14 days) USD8,000 – 14,000 South Georgia, Falklands & Antarctica cruise (18-23 days) USD9,000 – 20,000 Ross Sea cruise (30 – 35 days) USD25,000

2- How Much is a trip to Antarctica: Are you traveling solo?

Trips to Antarctica are very popular with solo travellers with typically at least 20% of passengers on board ship being single. The good news is that by travelling solo it doesn’t have to cost you any extra, depending on which option you choose:

Sharing a cabin with a companion travellers (always of the same sex) – you have the choice of which type of cabin you want and it’s the ship’s responsibility to pair you up. Your own cabin. Be prepared to book early though as they are in high demand. This option is more expensive than sharing, but less expensive than paying a supplement for a Twin cabin Single Supplement – If you definitely want your own cabin and a single isn’t available you will need to pay a single supplement to have your own Twin cabin. The single supplement is typically 70% of the cost of the second berth.

3-. How Much is a trip to Antarctica: What kind/how many activities do you wish to join in?

While most people find the daily shore excursions and Zodiac rides fulfilling enough, there are cruises that offer many outdoor things to do in Antarctica: Camping, Kayaking, skiing, hiking, etc. Not all cruises offer this type of activities. Some cruises offer this activities with an extra cost, and some other cruises offer special departures where they include this type of activities without an extra cost.

So be careful to choose the correct cruise/dates departures and to book really in advance because the availability is very limited!

4- How Much is a trip to Antarctica: How in advance do you book your trip?

The sooner you book your trip the best fares you can get.

There will always be those who wait until the last minute in the hope of picking up a great deal, but in Antarctica cruises, this is not the case. The last-minute deals are the same price as the prices you can get booking 18 months in advance, and because the ship will be mostly booked you will have far fewer options regarding optional activities, the location of your cabin, or even if you can share a room with a traveling companion. There’s also the possibility that you won’t find a deal at all!

Since you may not save any money by waiting and the risk of not getting on a cruise is high, book your cruise as soon as you possibly can, 18 months in advance or more if you can. In addition to cashing in on early booking deals or discounts (if available), you will also have the opportunity to pre-book optional activities like camping or kayaking.

5- How Much is a trip to Antarctica: When are you traveling?

December, January, and February are the most popular months to visit Antarctica, and cruises are most expensive during those times. Look at November and March, the shoulder season, when wildlife spotting might be a little harder (although still very possible) and the temperatures will be a bit colder. You’ll be treated to a few things other visitors won’t see, including stunning ice formations and even sunrises and sunsets (which are nonexistent close to December’s solstice!)
